MLFM April 2013: Speechless and Blue(Vox)

Escape Into the Music

Growing up back in the day, when feeling a little down, I would make a mixtape, throw on my headphones, light some candles and let the music take me to another time and place.

The cool thing about making a mixtape is that you're actually stitching together a storyboard, a soundtrack of what you're feeling at the time and for me when I would kick back and listen to the tunes I could escape into my own little world. This was back in my single days. I would go to the record store and buy cassettes then later buying CDs (my first to music CDs were Donald Fagen's "Kamakiriad" and the Braxton Brother's "Now & Forever" from Best Buy).

This mixture of tunes for me takes me back to that time when I realized that no matter how blue I was feeling music was my Elixir. The third track "Soul" by Floacist really speaks volumes to me because not one genre of music spoke to me and just because I enjoyed all music I wasn't a "Sell Out".

"Morph the Cat" and "On the Dunes" are tunes by Donald Fagen that I never grow tired of hearing. I would love one day to write a story that ties in to the albums "The Nightfly" and "Kamakiriad". I love how these albums tells the story of a person growning up in the 1950s (The Nightfly) and the adventures of a lad with his new age vehicle (Kamakiriad) as he travels from one place another. If I'm in a funk Donald Fagen is the man to bring me back into the light.

Speaking of Fagen, the group Danny Wilson was a group that didn't really get notice here in the states like they should have. They were only known for the tune "Mary's Prayer". When I heard that tune my gut told me it was more to this trio. Gary Clark(vocals), Ged Grimes(bassist) and Gary's brother, Kit(guitarist) had a vibe I couldn't place me finger on at the time. When I was a stocker at Ann Taylor, one of the sales associates loaned me her "meet Danny Wilson" album and she something that to this day I remember, she said, "they have that 'Steely Dan kinda feel', and she was right.

I can't remember say Michael Franks' "Blue Pacific" album is my favorite album. Not saying it's not a good album...IT'S A GREAT ALBUM. I say it's hard to say because so many of his albums are a treasure to own. The tune "Chez Nous" is a beautiful love song about a missing his mate. With the help from Joe Sample on the piano pushes this tune over the top and lands in the top 10 of one of my favorite compositions from Mr. Franks. Michael Franks and Donald Fagen are my "go to" music when I need a Pick-Me-Up every time when feeling down.

The cool thing about Toto is that this group of talented musicians is a powerhouse rather together of if they are performing solo. The track, "99" shows the vocal talent of Steve Lukather and his guitar skills.

The track "Big Lies Small World" by Sting puts me in mind of the movies, "Something's Gotta Give"and "It's Complicated". Very intelligent, very well thoughout composition. Very subtle, very romantic but haunting at the same time.

"Return of the Mack" and "Woman of the World" are tracks for me that don't fit into one genre for me. "Return of the Mack" has a mixture of Pop and Contemporary Jazz affect on me, especially with this version with the piano solo opening and closing. I had a hard time tracking this version down but I manage to find it because if I didn't find the extended version I believe this playlist would have had an entirely different feel to it. The Swiss group Double (Felix Haug (drums and keyboards) and Kurt Maloo (guitar and vocals) was a "One-Hit Wonder" here in the states but again hearing their playing style made me invest in their album (I still have their cassette album to this day). Every track on that album I enjoy and it showcases their arrangements and lyric writing.

The remake of the classic tune "Sailing" by Christopher Cross is an elegant, enticing track by Saint Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands native Jon Lucien. This is why I do what I do when it comes to podcasting is to bring you music that makes you stop and say, "Whoa, that is too cool".

What raps up this playlist is a tune that for me everything is right on point: from the guitar work, the lead vocals by Mr. Charlie Wilson, the harmony vocals by his brothers, Ronnie and Robert Wilson. "Yearning for your Love" is a classic that puts today's love songs to shame. The bass work by Robert Wilson and the guitar solo by Fred Jenkins.

I hope you enjoy this playlist because I had a ball putting this together.

Be Blessed, Be Safe, and Never stop searching for Great, Quality Music.
