MyLoveForMusic: Twilight[March 2009 edition]

I am really excited about putting together this podcast I don't know where to begin. One artist I have known about for years, another I discovered while listening to Andy McKee, another artist I discovered on eMusic and the other gem is from a fellow twitter(er)...if that makes any sense.

Jonn Serrie I first discover when working at The Nature Company Store back in the late 80s. I didn't know what "soundscape" or "space music" was until I heard Jonn Serrie. "Flightpath" is the album I will be showcasing 3 tracks. I had this cassette LP for years and lost it. Imagine my joy when I found it on eMusic. I have had this LP for a while and now I get a chance to showcase his work(these tracks are going out to my fellow podcaster Travis(his website "Hiddenplace" is a wonderful site to get some of the best ambient/downtempo music). It was hard picking the tracks to play because all six tracks I truly enjoy.

Last year Andy McKee caught me off guard with his wonderful guitar work so while checking out Mr. McKee on YouTube I also came across his label colleague Don Ross then I found out they recorded an album together. After checking that out I took the chance to buy Don Ross' "Music for Vacuuming" and I was not disappointed AT ALL. I have always loved the acoustic guitar from Earl Klugh, Will Ackerman, Alex de Grassi, the late Michael Hedges, Peter White...I can go on and on. Four tracks will be showcased from Mr. Ross album...very relaxing, very subdued. Where Andy McKee is a very gifted with his technique Don Ross not only holds his own but his compositions takes you on an journey of peace, tranquility, and wonderous bliss.

I have to admit I had never heard of Mars Lasar but from time to time I like to take chances on artists and since this was a free album download on eMusic I was like, "what the hey, why not?" I am so glad I did. With the mixture of acoustic, electronic this album, "Free Music from Mars" will make me by his music from here on. Three tracks is showcased from this album. From the track "Sacrifice" (I love the chant in this track) to "Universe In Time" I had fun picking and listening to these tracks. Mars is one of those artists that I'm glad I stumbled across him and upset with myself that I did not discover him sooner but hey I'm blessed to be able to bring his music to the masses now.

What can I say about Atomic Skunk? I last Sunday I received a request to follow this person on twitter, I accepted and I saw his link to his site. I was just saying to myself I needed to find some new ambient/soundscape music and God answered my prayers. You can read my review of Atomic Skunk's "Binary Scenes" album. I'm not going to lie, I know I played his album 3 times back to back. This cat is truly a gifted composer/musician. I enjoyed his album so much I know people grew tired of me retweetin' his link to his site (I know Rich didn't mind). On this podcast I will be showcasing three tracks from his album, I truly love the track, "Flying Spiders of Babylon". I love when musician mix electronic with voice overs either from movies or just day to day life. If he keeps this up this guy will be known around the world very, very soon.

This show is close to 90 minutes so I suggest to best time to listen to this is in the evening. Sometimes it's best to let the music "breathe" so you will hear id drops but not a long winded voice over from me because sometimes it's cool to let the music "just be." Get whatever you need accomplished around the house, turn the lights off, light some candles, lay back and relax.

Enjoy the music

MyLoveForMusic: InspirationSounds for March 2009

In The Midnight Hour...

It's something when you think God is not listening to you, you feel like He is not answering your prayers, you cry out to Him and just when you think you can't take any more He allows a "little" more to pile on you and just when you are on your knees, you can't cry even when you try you and feel like "enough is enough" that is when God comes through...in the midnight hour.

I am learning that the stronger your faith the more He will allow in your life and I'm learning that for me it is teaching me two things: (one) I realize no matter how strong I think I am I can do nothing with God, no way, no how (two) When the breakthrough comes I can give thanks to know but my Lord and Savior because He presses my back to the wall and then breaks through that wall.

These past weeks I have rushed into God's word, listening to God's word, listening to men of God, listening to God fearing business men when it comes to success, realizing where my strength comes from, realizing the God truly has not put a spirit of fear in me and begin to truly believe that "If God is for me, who can be against me?"

This collection of compositions for me represents for me to always push forward and not to look back, to truly begin to realize that when you fail it is an event, not who I am (a failure). I'm learning to be comfortable in my skin, to smile more, believing that I am "truly and wonderfully made"...

and so are you, never forget that.

13 For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother's womb.

14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.

15 My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place.
When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
All the days ordained for me
were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
~Psalm 139:13-16

My Reflection on Atomic Skunk's "Binary Scenes"Album

Sometimes you hear music and it has to grow on you then there is music that as soon as you hear it it grabs you and you have to let people know about it...this is that music. I love ambient, downtempo music and Atomic Skunk has that surreal, haunting yet relaxing music that makes you take notice.

This gentleman began following me on twitter and I have to admit some music I hear it and it doesn't move at that moment; I shrug my shoulders and go, "it's okay" but what I love about this album, "Binary Scenes" takes me back to when I first began listening to New Age, Smooth Jazz, Ambient (which I did not know the name of the genre at that time) when working at The Nature Company store in the mid 1990's. He puts me in the mind of John Serrie when I heard Flightpath for the first time. This is the type of music that makes me kick back, light some candles, turn off all the lights on a weekend night and just let my mind just "be".

From the beginning track, "Chronoswamp" you are embarking on a journey of peace and tranquility. I have not come across an album that I have enjoyed every track until this one. If this LP is having an effect on me and it's during the day I can't imagine how I will feel when I check this out later tonight (and yes I will be checking this out tonight). These tracks will be showcased on future MLFM shows, I'm not going to front. He has a free download of his album over at his site and for $9.99 you can get the 320kpbs download of the album which in my eyes and to my ears it is worth it. Another cool thing is that when you listen to his album on his site and you change the image from his cover art you have your choice of 9 different animated scenes...very cool.

If Atomic Skunk keeps this up the sky is truly the limit. Just when I thought I was going to have to hunt for some good ambient/soundscape music, it falls in my lap...thanks Rich Brodsky.

""Binary Scenes" is the debut release by San Francisco Bay Area electronic artist, Atomic Skunk. Atomic Skunk's music features "artful melodies with cinematic moodiness" and has been described as "Very meditative" and "Zen-like" with some "chaotic and dark elements/rhythms." The album, Binary Scenes was recorded entirely with Ableton Live in Marin County, California and features 8 fresh and original tracks that "force a headspace of chill and peacefulness." "Binary Scenes" is available now for streaming and online purchase in a wide variety of high quality formats at http://www.atomicskunk.com.

Rich Brodsky AKA "Atomic Skunk" has long been a fixture of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene. He has recorded and toured throughout the United States as a guitar player with multiple rock and psychedelic bands and projects since the early 1980s. Rich's initial exposure to ambient and electronic music came about in the early eighties, when he first heard the syndicated radio program "Hearts of Space". He immersed himself in this music and developed a strong passion for ambient electronic music and the computers used to create this music. Rich has just completed his first CD release of ambient psychedelic soundscapes from his home studio in Novato, California. You can find out more at:

MyLoveForMusic: 07March09 episode

Sometimes we need music to let it just "flow". No heavy lyrics, no complex music arrangements, just nice, kick back, warm fuzzy thoughts music and I believe this podcast is one of them. I rarely have vocal track in my shows but I this time I decided to have them in this podcast and it turned out really nice.

Special thanks to Luis for directing me to the gifted artist Alexander Blu, Amber Ojeda for the nice track and the wonderful id drop, Jacqui Naylor for reaching out to me with more music and allowing me to showcase more of her music. I truly love musicians that are doing their thing and at the same time allowing podcasters to showcase their music because many independent artists because they may not have a big label behind them but they are doing what they love and directing their own paths.

Whenever I'm Feeling Down...

For some reason whenever I'm feeling down in the dumps I throw on either Steely Dan or Donald Fagen and I begin to feel better. This past Friday night was a prime example. I had my iPod listening to one of my favorite tech podcast but it just wasn't doing for me so I began playing my Donald Fagen/Steely Dan playlist and I began to perk up.

This podcast is a "mini" show. I put my iPod on shuffle when playing my favorite music and the first seven songs popped up on the playlist. Another thing that triggered it was the fact that whenever I see photos of Doug Fresh's Studio it puts me in mind of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker so with said, I hope you enjoy the 7 tunes I bring to you and I hope if you are feeling down hearing this quality music will perk you up as well.

Enjoy/Be Blessed.
